Egerton University Consultancy Profile

University Information

Egerton University (EU) started off as a Farm School in 1939 by Lord Maurice Egerton of Tatton, when it admitted its first three students in makeshift premises. Teaching and learning at the school remained informal until the mid-1940’s when a formal nine-month certificate course was introduced. In 1949 a Diploma programme was initiated, paving way for the establishment of a Board of Governors to run the college through an Act of Parliament in 1955.

In 1986, the college was elevated to a constituent college of the University of Nairobi and in 1987 it was granted University status. In 2012, Parliament repealed Egerton Universities Act of 1985 and through the Universities Act of 2012, the university received a charter by the Commission for University Education. The award of the charter signifies that the university is accredited to award diploma and bachelors, masters and doctoral degree certificates.

Since then, the university enjoys a long-standing reputation as a centre of excellence in agricultural education and training. Similarly, the university also offers various programmes and courses in Education, Natural and applied Sciences, Health, Arts and Social Sciences and Law among others.

Currently, the university is located in two campuses; Njoro Main Campus and Nakuru Town Campus. It boasts of 51 departments across ten faculties, namely: Agriculture, Arts and Social Sciences, Commerce, Education and Community Studies, Engineering and Technology, Environment and Natural Resources, Health Sciences, Law, Science and Veterinary Medicine and Surgery. The university also runs a school of distance and online learning and Institute of Women, Gender and Development Studies.
